Workshop for 1997 ESA Meetings
Greetings!
I am pleased to announce that the Statistical Ecology Section of the ESA
voted at last month's business meeting to sponsor an S-PLUS workshop at
the 1997 ESA meetings. I am posting a message to the members of the
Statistical Ecology Section to continue discussion and gather more samples
(suggestions) from the population for the final proposal. The final
proposal is due near the end of October.
BACKGROUND:
The workshop will be designed for both new and experienced S-PLUS users.
By the end of the workshop, I hope to have demonstrated that S-PLUS can be
used by both researchers and instructors alike, for a range of tasks-from
data analysis and simulation techniques to graphical analysis and
illustration of ecological concepts. I am in the process of chosing
specific topics and examples. This in NOT a statistics workshop.
Several people provided suggestions for format and content of the
workshop. I will summarize these suggestions below. Please send comments
concerning the below listed ideas and other suggestions to me at the email
address listed at the end of this message. Thanks for your input!
Format/Content:
1. All day workshop: basics of S_PLUS programming. Syntax, data types,
functions.
2. All day workshop: basics of S-PLUS, with less detail than #1 and more
topics. Data types, import/export of data, simple statistical
analyses, graphics.
3. Two half-day workshops: first half, basics of S-PLUS, second
half, specialized topics (example: how to do an unbalanced repeated
measures ANOVA).
