Develop measures for ecosystem sustainability

Our graduate course in quantitative ecology has been given a project of
creating a professional paper which develops quantitative measures for
ecosystem sustainability in a very short time frame.  We are looking for
papers which define sustainability in a rigorous manner (negative
feedback, persistence, and boundedness are areas we were recommended to
explore).

Any pertinent literature/ideas would be greatly appreciated.   My email
