Ecosystem Ecologist
TERM-APPOINTMENT, POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION
The Office of Research and Development (ORD) of the US EPA
plans to hire nearly 50 Post-Doctoral researchers in term-
appointments by October 1, 1998. One of these appointments
will be made at the Western Ecology Division, Corvallis, of
the National Health and Environmental Effects Research
Laboratory (NHEERL). This position in Corvallis is for an
ecosystem ecologist for a period of three years. The
individual will work in a research team setting on
developing measures and methods to assess the functioning of
forested ecosystems affected by anthropogenic stresses. The
primary focus of the position is to conduct research on the
flow of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and/or oxygen through
forested ecosystems using natural abundance levels of the
stable isotopes of these elements. The overall objective of
the larger project in which this research lies, is to
develop measures, methods and models that can be used to
assess current ecosystem function, and/or predict whether
the current functioning of the ecosystem can be sustained.
The incumbent will be expected to interact with soil
scientists, ecosystem ecologists, biogeochemical modelers,
landscape- and global-scale modelers, physiologists,
microbial ecologists, molecular ecologists, and
statisticians. The preferred incumbent has knowledge of
ecosystem processes in both the above- and below-ground
portions of terrestrial ecosystems, and hands-on experience
working with mass spectrometers with stable isotopes at
natural abundance levels. Candidates with educational and
research experience using stable isotopes in the context of
ecosystem science, soil science, soil biology/ecology, or
terrestrial plant ecophysiology are encouraged to apply.
