You are invited. And so also your friends and colleagues. Please forward
this invitation particularly to any of your friends and colleagues planning
to attend the Congress in Florence. If you would rather have me invite
them direct, please do not hesitate to send me their email addresses.
The awards ceremony starts at 10:30AM on Monday, July 20, 1998 in the
Auditorium of Palazzo dei Congressi with the Distinguished Statistical
Ecologist Awards with Professor Dr. Wolfgang Haber, Past President, INTECOL
and Professor Akira Miyawaki, President, INTECOL, participating with
Professor G. P. Patil as the Master of Ceremony. The past presidents,
George Knox and Frank Golley, will also participate.
The distinguished statistical ecologist awards were initiated in 1986 at
the Syracuse Congress Plenary Session on Statistical Ecology by the INTECOL
Statistical Ecology Group. The awards recognize the outstanding
contributions to the development of basic concepts and applications of
statistical ecology. The Manchester Congress celebrated the Silver Jubilee
of Statistical Ecology and recognized twenty-five eminent statistical
ecologists. The winners so far have been: Harold Burkhart, K. P.
Burnham, Joel E. Cohen, L. Lee Eberhardt, David W. Goodall, P.
Greig-Smith, M. P. Hassell, Rob Hengeveld, Richard Hennemuth, J. N. R.
Jeffers, E. Kuno, Pierre Legendre, Simon Levin, Bertil Matern, B. F. J.
Manly, Sir Robert May, James H. Matis, Masaaki Morisita, R. V. O'Neill,
Laszlo Orloci, G. P. Patil, E. C. Pielou, Fred Ramsey, Orazio Rossi, Dan
Simberloff, Robert Sokal, Sir Richard Southwood, L. R. Taylor, W. G.
Warren, and William E. Waters.
In recognition of the final quarter of this century, the awards committee
has selected twenty-five eminent statistical ecologists for the final
awards of this century. You will surely want to be a part of this historic
event planned by the awards committee consisting of Pierre Legendre, B. F.
J. Manly, R. V. O'Neill, G. P. Patil, Orazio Rossi, and Sir Richard
Southwood . The award winners on this occasion are:
Roy Malcolm Anderson, Colin W. Clark, Richard Cormack, Enrico Feoli, Robert
Gardner, Anil Gore, John C. Gower, Stuart H. Hurlbert, John Lawton, Marc
Mangel, B. J. T. Morgan, Anthony R. Olsen, W. Scott Overton, Bernard C.
Patten, Joe Perry, C. R. Rao, Douglas S. Robson, Michael L. Rosenzweig, Jon
Schnute, Hans Schreuder, G. A. F. Seber, George Sugihara, Charles Taillie,
C. J. F. TerBraak, and Antony Underwood. See them, hear them, and talk to
them.
The awards committee has also planned a timely panel discussion immediately
after the awards ceremony. It should be a treat to hear the distinguished
panel of some of the past and present distinguished statistical ecologist
award winners. And also the ensuing floor discussion with the
distinguished gathering inclusive of yourself. The discussion theme is
hot, but a potential source of light. It is: The 20th Century Statistical
Ecology with a View to the 21st Century. You will surely want to be a part
of this historic event planned by the awards committee.
Best regards.

International Association for Ecology
Statistical Ecology Group
Frontiers of Statistical Ecology and Ecological Statistics
Distinguished Statistical Ecologist Awards
Motivation and Purpose:
Largely to highlight and emphasize the cross-disciplinary focus of
statistical ecology, the Group has initiated the distinguished statistical
ecologist awards. The awards focus on distinguished contributions made by
academic, governmental, and industrial scientists, working on problems in
statistical ecology and/or ecological statistics. Young investigator
awards intended to encourage greater participation and study in statistics,
ecology, and the environment are also integral features of this initiative.
Nineteen Ninety Eight Awards:
The Group has made the awards in recognition of:
(1) outstanding contributions to the development of methods, issues,
concepts, applications, and the initiatives of statistical ecology and/or
ecological statistics; and
(2) foundational effort leading to the formulation of an important area of
statistical ecology and/or ecological statistics.
