participate in the symposium in a manner that fits your purpose best with
the symposium theme and its forward-looking thrust.
Should you like to present a relevant paper, email me your abstract of a
suitable size with five keywords and three pertinent references. Should
you like to put together a thematic contributed papers session of four to
six presentations, email me the proposed session makeup inclusive of the
four to six abstracts. This would also be the time for the organization of
thematic luncheon roundtable discussion sessions on topics of vital
interest. The emails received on or before January 11, 1999 would be
particularly helpful. My email address is gpp@stat.psu.edu . I look
forward to hearing from you. Together we can make the symposium a memorable
occasion of the twentieth century taking us into the next century. Plans
are in progress on a suitable symposium publication.
As a part of my sabbatical in the spring of 99, I plan to be a
Distinguished Lukacs Professor in the Department of Mathematics and
Statistics at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. And in
this capacity, I am scheduled to put together the Ninth Lukacs Symposium at
Bowling Green during April 23-25, 1999 in collaboration with Dr. Arjun K.
Gupta, Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at
Bowling Green. The theme of the forthcoming symposium will be: Frontiers
of Environmental and Ecological Statistics for the 21st Century with
Emphasis on Statistical Ecology, Environmental Statistics, Environmental
and Ecological Assessment and Risk Assessment. Last year's symposium was a
great success on Statistics for the 21st Century under the direction of
last year's Distinguished Lukacs Professor. My colleague, Professor C. R.
Rao, Fellow of Royal Society and Member of the U.S. National Academy of
Sciences, had put the program together.
The centrality of the proposed symposium lies in the important collective
effort on the COMPASS for Environmental and Ecological Statistics for the
21st Century looking for a productive Combination of Practicality And
Scholarship (COMPASS), leading to important challenges, opportunities, and
directions in the new millenium for Statistics, Ecology, Environment, and
Society.
The symposium plans to keep its tradition of local hospitality to each
participant. Bowling Green makes payments direct to the parties involved
in behalf of the guest. This covers the banquet (Saturday evening) and the
mixer (Friday evening). The symposium does not have provision for travel
support, nor for any other items, such as registration at $75 (student) and
at $150 (non-student), etc. The symposium will begin on Friday early
morning and end on Sunday late afternoon. Recommended arrival time is
Thursday evening and recommended departure time is Sunday evening. The
airport involved is Detroit or Toledo. Professor Gupta is in the process
of setting up a web page for the symposium to cover pertinent information,
both logistical and technical. In the meanwhile, if you like, you may feel
free to browse through Bowling Green web page http://www.bgsu.edu/ and
http://www.bgsu.edu/departments/math/ .
Please feel free to share this call for this exciting symposium with any of
your potentially interested friends, colleagues, students, and young
professionals.
Many thanks. And best regards.
