John, could you please forward this to the synthesis volume mail group.
Thanks,
Bob
REMINDER:
The outlines for the VCR synthesis volume are due in the beginning of December.
There are 2 starts to the process on the VCR Synthesis Volume home page:
the Megasite and Biodiversity chapters. Compliments to Guofan Sao and Mike
Erwin and friends for their efforts. The processes chapter has a beginning
that I've seen also thanks to Iris Anderson et al. This should be on the web
soon. The various groups seem to have begun with a survey of data sets avail-
able. These may be worth a look by others.
In my last note I indicated that Oxford was looking for a broader view than
was evident in the outline. After reviewing the replies (both) to my
call for thought about the theme, I think that we need to focus on various
aspects of disturbance/stress and response which in fact are central to
our work. But we need to strongly indicate the importance of our work and
thought in the broader perspective. Some things that come to mind and have
been mentioned include the "intermediate disturbance hypothesis" and the
applicability of the coastal zone to theories developed elsewhere. The link
between stress/disturbance, biological feedback systems (+ and -) and promotion
or decrease of stability and therefore state change seem like issues
with a large audience to me.
COULD YOU PLEASE SEND ME CITATIONS OF YOUR FAVORITE WORKS ON THESE ISSUES.
I WOULD LIKE TO PREPARE A READING LIST AS A FOCUS TO THE THEME!!!!!!
Thanks,
Bob Christian
