Happy Holidays! I know that all of you are thinking about what presents to
buy whom and the synthesis volume. Well, let me give you an update on the
latter.

We have had a poor showing so far. I have an outline on the "process" chapter
III.2 with Frank Day as the lead (with Linda and Iris). This has taken an inte
resting turn in focusing on organic matter accumulation. I received this
over e-mail. Craig Kochel sent me an outline via e-mail, but not in a .txt
file. Unfortunately, I couldn't read it. My suggestion is send me a .txt file
or send it to John Porter to be placed on our synthesis home page.

John Walsh et al. have posted their outline on the home page. That's the
chapter on disturbance.

There are other entries on the home page: by Mike Erwin et al. on"populations,
communitiesand biodiversity," by Guofan Shao on the "megasite" and by Iris
Anderson on information on C & N cycling. These all reflect meetings, but they
don't have a definitive outline that I can tell.

And that's about it, unless I've lost something. Double check on me!

So what now? Well, I think that we are going to try to have a meeting of some
sort in February with the book as a major topic. If we have what we have now,
it will be a minor topic.

Therefore, can you make every effort to have an outline posted on the web
by 15 January. I will be happy to look at them on the web, or over e-mail
prior to then. However, until I get more of them in, it is hard to give
much direction. THe major feedback will come at the meeting in February.

So if you are a lead author on a chapter, please pull together your crew
to write up something. A page or 2 is all that's needed for now. We just
want to see that we have covered all of the topics, have similar goals and
audiences, and reduce unnecessary overlap. At the meeting we also need to
focus on the general theme and the need to make it as broad as possible.

If you are not a lead author, contact the lead and ask if you can help.

Sorry to nag, but that's my job!

Again, have a good Holiday. In fact, I'll be away for the next week, so
you already have a reprieve.

Bob
