From: Bob Christian
Date: 7 January 1997
You should have seen by now that we are having a meeting at the shore
on 1 and 2 March 1997. One of the major topics will be the synthesis
volume. Therefore , we have a deadline that is now pretty hard. We
really need the various chapter outlines for the meeting. In fact we need
them before the meeting to review and revise and so that we are not
sitting around reading at the meeting.
Now the good news is that my previous deadline of 15 January was based
on an expected, earlier meeting date. A better, more realistic due date
would be 1 February. This will give me chance to give you feedback and
have your revisions posted on the web at least 1 week prior to the
meeting.
If you are a lead author of a chapter, please contact your other authors
and act as a filter for their material. If you are a coauthor, please contact
your lead author and tell him or her where you are in your part.
As you may remember, we need to demonstrate a broad theme for our
book. It seems that ecosystem state response to perturbations and
stressors and internal feedbacks remains the central theme for our
studies and hence the book. It would be nice though to have some
greater core experience for us in developing the theme. Here are 2 papers
on the topics that I have found very useful and informative.
A. E. Lugo. 1978. Stress and ecosystems. pp. 62-101. In J. H. Thorp and
J. W. Gibbons (eds.), Energy and Environmental Stress in Aquatic
Systems. DOE Symposium Series. (CONF-771114). National Technical
Information Service, Springfield, VA.
J. B. Wilson and A. D. Q. Agnew. 1992. Positive-feedback switches in
plant communities. Advances in Ecological Research 23:263-336.
Try to find and read them by the meeting. If you can not find them in
your library, let me know and Ill send you a copy. (but try!) Also, if any
of you have similar recommendations, please let me know. There may be
some better focus papers for us.
Thanks for what youre about to do, and Ill see you in March.
