Bob:

In my view there are two things we can do to expand the audience (or vision)
for the VCR volume. First, when ever possible our work should be
interpreted within the context of other coastal systems, US and Global. The
Ecosystems of the World two volume set on Dry Coastal Ecosystems edited by
van der Maarel is packed with comparative information that may be of help.
Second, for the ecological view we should do something similar to your
comment about Jay's course. Describe the important aspects of coastal
ecology, but then evaluate how it is different from other ecologiccal
systems and what theories/principles do not apply or are unique to coastal
systems. Island biogeography, competition/facilitation (e.g. Bertness's
work), nutrient cycling and succession come to mind here. Third, there is
lots of human interest in coastal systems due to vacationing and coastal
development. I think we need to address what our findings can tell us about
man's impact on coastal systems. For example, Shao has the wonderful
simulations and recreations of island shoreline migration. What does
shoreline migration tell us about the wisdom of coastal development?

I hope these ideas are of help. If you want me to elaborate on any, I will try.

Cheers,

Don
