Chapter section outlines on marshes for Section II.

----------------------------Original message----------------------------
Bob,

Outlines are attached. Let me know if it doesnt come through okay so I
can FAX you a copy.

Some thoughts:

I looked over Kochels proposed addition to Section II.2 (Barrier
Islands-Overwash areas). I agree that it would be a good idea to have
the overall overwash area characterized. Im not necessarily opposed to
having the back-barrier marsh portion within this proposed addition (see
Kochels II.2.3C) however, there is enough material to warrant having
backbarrier (overwash) marshes in its current position rather than
nesting it into another level. Perhaps another possibility would be to
have a section on overwash added to the present sections so that it would
look like this:

Following D. Youngs outline as a guide-

II.2.A Introduction, II.2.B Upland, II.2.C added Overwash section, II.2.D
Backbarrier marsh, II.2.E Synthesis.

I also want to be sure that I am defining lagoonal marshes the same as
everyone else. Obviously Chimney Pole, Egging marsh, and others
completely surrounded by lagoon water are lagoonal marshes. Are we also
going to include here the extensions of backbarrier marshes into the
lagoon (i.e. Cattleshed). These "extensions" are so far removed from the
island proper that they have very similar characteristics to the lagoonal
marshes I have just mentioned. I would be in favor of including
locations like Cattleshed as lagoonal marshes. Otherwise the backbarrier
section will need to be split up into 1) young overwash marshes and 2)
older "extended" marshes.

Anyway,
This is pretty thrown together so I hope that it will be of some use.
Let me know how things go over the weekend and we can discuss things
further next week or whenever. Looking forward to the feedback.

II.2.C Backbarrier Marshes

1. Introduction
	a. Brief overwash history (unless this is redundant from elsewhere)

	b. Island dynamics dictate stage of marsh development (relate to Hayden
et al 91, Dame et al 92, Childers work)

	c. Position of present backbarrier marshes
		i. w/r/t Landscape
ii. w/r/t Time (short term- S. Parr/Halloween storm,
				   long-term- S.Hog chronosequence)

2. Comparison/contrast with other VCR marshes: Role of island dynamics
						(overwash)
	a. Structure
		i. Position w/r/t tidal range
ii. Sediment characteristics (lots and lots of sand!)
		iii. Flora and fauna distribution

	b. Processes
		i. Primary Production
		ii. Hydrology
		iii. Nutrient cycling

3. Comparison/contrast with other coastal marsh ecosystems
	a. Landscape dynamics

	c. Tidal range (opportunity here to add stuff from
comparison study with Pritchards Island, SC
			 and Childers work)

4. Predicted response to Sea Level Rise
	a. Increased frequency of overwash

	b. Movement on landscape (relate to Brinson et al 95)

ii. w/r/t Time (relate to younger backbarrier marshes)

	b. Role of sedimentation/erosion in stability/instability

2. Comparison/contrast with other VCR marshes: Role of exposure
