An Annotated Example
of a Research Summary
Note: This example was drawn from research summary
Spatial variations in shrub thicket gap characteristics on Hog Island.
by Edward R. Crawford and Donald R. Young. Portions have been
deleted in this example for brevity.
Here is the raw text file:
In an effort to elucidate successional mechanisms involved in the
development of climax maritime forests, we quantified canopy gaps which
naturally occurred within (<i>Myrica cerifera</i>) shrub thickets on Hog
Island. Thicket microclimate, spatial heterogeneity, and edaphic
characteristics within canopy gaps, as well as within intact understories, were
compared for productive (Mid-Island) and aging (Bay Side) thickets to discern
if gap characteristics vary with thicket age.

Some things to note in the above paragraph:
- HTML tags are enclosed in "<" and ">"
- most HTML tags come in pairs <i> starts italics and
</i> stops the italics.
- the paragraph end is marked with <p>.
Here is how the paragraph appears when displayed:

Links to Graphics
The next paragraph shows the way to link to graphics or other documents.
Thicket gaps on the northern portion of Hog Island were
identified by an extensive ground survey. A total of 21 gaps were
identified, 10 were located within the Mid-Island thicket, while 11
were located within the Bay Side thicket <a
href="http://www.vcrlter.virginia.edu/davedocs/VCRASC95/crawford.gif">(Fig.
1)</a>. On Hog Island, small gaps were prevalent in the younger
more productive thicket, conversely, large gaps were prevalent within
the aging thicket. Gaps within these contrasting thickets differed in
microclimate and species richness. <p>
This paragraph shows the addition of an "anchor" to the document.
Anchors are only needed if you wish to create links that point to
other documents or graphics. The anchor here is:
<a
href="http://www.vcrlter.virginia.edu/davedocs/VCRASC95/crawford.gif">(Fig.
1)</a>
It specifies that when the words (Fig. 1)
are clicked on, the graphics file "crawford.gif" will be displayed.
The anchor itself has several parts. <a specifies the
beginning of the anchor. The href= specifies the name of the
file to be displayed. This can be a simple file name, or a full URL
address (e.g.,
http://www.vcrlter.virginia.edu/graphics/Eastern_Shore.jpg, which
specifies the name of the host computer and directory where the image
is found). The closing > finishes the start of the anchor and
</a> closes the anchor. Anything found between the
<a href="...> section and the </a> will be highlighted
in blue and can be clicked on to view the image or document in the
href= section.

Tables
Tables can be handled in two ways. The simplest is to use a
fixed-width font in the table. This is done using the tags
<pre> and </pre> to enclose the text of the
table. The table below also shows the use of the "Heading" tags
(e.g., <h2>Table 1.</h2>) to use a larger font and
boldfacing. Smaller heading numbers lead to larger fonts
(<h1> is the biggest, <h6> is the smallest).
The and tags handle superscripts. See the HTML
Table of Contents for details on how to use the fancier
HTML-formatted tables.
