The Soil Survey of Northampton County, Virginia contains a Soil Survey map set of 21 sheets. To date, only the Cape Charles and Cheriton areas have been put in digital form. These areas corespond to sheet 13 and sheet 14, west of Mockhorn Bay. For more information on this dataset refer to soilmeta.htm or the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service book which accompanies the map set. Base maps are orthophotographs prepared by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Geological Survey, from 1982 aerial photography. Coordinate grid ticks and land division corners, if shown, are approximately positioned. Scale is 1:15,840 Projection is in Longitute/Latitude Measurement units are in feet (State Plane Coordinate System) 1.2.2 Purpose: Northampton County planning 1.3 Time Period of Content 9.1 Single Date/Time 9.1.1 Calendar Date: 1987???? 1.3.1 Currentness Reference: publication date 1.4 Status 1.4.1 Progress: ~1 and 3/4 sheets of 21 sheet set done to date. 1.4.2 Maintenance and Update Frequency: None planned 1.5 Spatial Domain 1.5.1 Bounding Coordinates 1.5.1.1 West Bounding Coordinate (longitude): -76.2 1.5.1.2 East Bounding Coordinate (longitude): -75.6 1.5.1.3 North Bounding Coordinate (latitude): 37.6 1.5.1.4 South Bounding Coordinate (latitude): 37.1 1.6 Keywords 1.6.1 Theme 1.6.1.1 Theme Keyword Thesaurus: None 1.6.1.2 Theme Keyword: Soil 1.6.1.2 Theme Keyword: Survey 1.6.2 Place 1.6.2.1 Place Keyword Thesaurus: None 1.6.2.2 Place Keyword: Northampton County 1.6.2.2 Place Keyword: Virginia 1.7 Access Constraints: None. 1.8 Use Constraints: This is one piece of a GIS database presently being developed for Northampton County's planning purposes. This Arc coverage was given attributes to correspond to the legend on the paper map. There are two versions of this coverage; soil and soilorig. Soilorig represents the general soil map as it was in the Soil Survey booklet. It's scale is 1:190,000. Soil has been adapted for use with other maps of Northampton County which are at 1:100,000-scale. This was done by deleting all exterior arcs in the soilorig coverage and replacing them with the USGS 1:100,000-scale Hydrology outline coverage created for use at the county. Interior lines were not moved but were in some cases extended or clipped to match the more detailed shoreline of the overlaid county outline. Small islands which were not present in the larger resolution General Soil Map were assigned the class value of the neighboring islands. 2.5.2 Process Step 2.5.2.1 Process Description: A final version was converted to State Plane, NAD83 using PROJECT and EXPORTed (compression NONE) for use on a PC.(Some descriptive attribute information is not readily interchangable between systems.) Another version was converted to UTM, NAD83 using PROJECT for use on a UNIX system and EXPORTed (compression FULL). 2.5.2.3 Process Date (completed): 19950322 2.5.2.5 Source Produced Citation Abbreviation: none 2.5.2.6 Process Contact (processor): Ray Dukes Smith 10.2 Contact Organization Primary 10.1.2 Contact Organization: Virginia Coast Reserve - Long Term Ecological Research (VCR/LTER) 10.1.1 Contact Person: Ray Dukes Smith 10.4 Contact Address 10.4.1 Address Type: mailing and physical address 10.4.2 Address: LTER, Dept.
