The Town of Broadwater on Hog Island, Virginia (circa 1900)

Prior to its demise in the 1930s, the town of Broadwater on Virginia's Hog Island was home to 250 people and the population of the island would grow to 400 in the summer and during hunting season. Broadwater was built on high ground forested by loblolly pine. Today neither the high ground nor Broadwater is to be found. The site of Broadwater is now hundreds of meters offshore. Photo from C. J.
