High land on Hog Island in the 1920s

The southern end of Hog Island at the turn of the century had dunes 30 feet high and a loblolly pine forest. By the 1920s erosion by storm waves had removed much of the high ground on Hog Island. Today the southern end of hog island is everywhere less than 12 feet above sea level. Photo from C. J. Badger and R. Kellam. The Barrier Islands. Stackpole Books, Harrisburg, PA.
